Breaking into Project Management

Hello,

I've been looking at a career change towards PM (I'm currently working in admin) and someone suggested that I go down the route of doing an APM qualification. Looking at their website, the Introductory Certificate looks like the best place to start, but I was wondering if there's a likelihood of gaining employment just off the back of that (and then looking to do higher qualifications later)?

Is anyone able to offer any insight or advice regarding this, or suggest a better route in? I'm in Leeds in the north of England if that has any impact on employability.

It might be worth contacting a project management careers advice organisation or project management recruitment specialist. They may be able to give you an idea about employability in relation to the qualification you mention.

Hi,

Hopefully you have taken the previous responders advice and have spoken to recruitment companies to see what they are looking for. In my experience though qualifications are seen as supporting experience. I have both my APMP and Prince2 qualifications but find it hard to obtain a Project Manager role due to most of my experience having been gained to date as a Business Analyst.

If your background is in admin, you may want to look at roles like Project Officer or Project Analyst. These roles are a good starting point and you will probably have a lot of transferable skills which employers would be looking for.

Regards to your post, you are advice to start with a primary certification that would ground you more with the basis of PM before going for higher qualifications.
