Project life cycle stages

All,

How do you subdivide your project into delivery stages? Would you always have a Definition, Design, Development, Deployment framework? What rational do you use to divide the project into stages?

If your WBS is focused on top-level products, then do your delivery stages have the same format?

Do you find some of the delivery stages run in parallel?
