Hi all,

I’m really keen to understand what a day in the life of a PMO is like and wondered if any of you would be as so kind as to share your experiences or observations?
  • What would a typical daily task be?
  • What exactly would the role entail?
  • What type of hours would you work?
  • What did you enjoy most about the role?
  • What did you dislike most about the role?
  • What advice would you share with someone looking to enter a banking PMO role?
Keen to gain your thoughts here and thanks in advance for posting, your input in genuinely appreciated.

Thanks,

A

Hi,

It is hard to be concise with answering your queries. As the point to note with PMO's is that they are all unique to the host organisation.

Example: I am in a PMO and I personally project manage the delivery of projects, with no support from others within the PMO. However, typically, you would expect a PMO to have PM's and then project controllers supporting them. The project controllers do admin type tasks, take ownership of simple tasks, or even run small projects. It is common that PMO staff support a group of PM's, or a single PM.

To me, a PMO support role is the precursor to becoming a PMO, but then again I have been told specifically that PMO support roles (project controllers) is a career in itself.

You really need to find out what the roles and responsibilities are for your PMO. What other people are in the PMO? A PMO is so generic that your role could vary from one organisations to another.

I hope this helps,
Kit.
