Advice needed

Postby josephliverpool » Thu 25 May 2017 9:12 pm

Hi everyone.

This sort of post has probably been put here a million times but here goes...I'm an aspiring project manager.

Having worked as a property lawyer for approx ten years, I am looking for a career change and I am interested in a career in project management. I have recently completed the Prince2 Foundation course and I am currently studying for the Practitioner level as well as the M_o_R (all self funded I might add).

I approached senior management where I currently work and advised them I was looking at project management as a career and they were extremely helpful and actually put me on an in-house course where I worked on a dummy project with senior project managers and gained experience in drafting a business case, project brief, basically the majority of the Prince2 documents. The questions I have are;

  1. Where do I go from here?
  2. Will it hold me back not having a PM related degree as all of my qualifications are legal based?
  3. Does working on a dummy project actually look ok on your CV?
  4. I was going to hold off sitting the Practitioner level Prince2 until I found an entry level job so I can apply the work experience to the qualification or would it be wise to sit the Practitioner exam now so I have it under my belt?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

First of all I am initially an engineer that fell in to project management. It started with me when I saw that the previous company needed project managers desperately and I stepped forward. Since then I did the APMP (Prince 2 equivelent)

With your questions I would say

Where do I go from here? See if you can volunteer where you are to run a few small projects. Look for associate project manager roles

Will it hold me back not having a PM related degree as all of my qualifications are legal based? Absolutely not. In fact it may help more as you will understand the projects you run. My qualifications are aerospace engineer.

Does working on a dummy project actually look ok on your CV? You can put this as extra work you did to gain experience on top of your role, which looks good to any future employer

I was going to hold off sitting the Practitioner level Prince2 until I found an entry level job so I can apply the work experience to the qualification or would it be wise to sit the Practitioner exam now so I have it under my belt? I believe either is good although experience definitely makes the study and exam easier

I hope this helps and project management is fun most of the time. Good luck
