Right Project Managment Course for a Marketer

Postby debjanikundu2012 » Mon 08 Aug 2016 2:45 pm

Hi All,

I am looking to do a project management course to get a formal qualification and improve my prospects. I worked as a marketing manager launching big campaigns and for the last 4 years, I have been managing customer facing programmes like retention project, proposition launch, new technology launch, etc. I am increasingly doing roles in which I manage small and big projects with multiple work streams. I am looking to position my self as a multi-skilled project manager and think a formal qualification will help. I am not able to make up my mind on which course to go for. If anyone on the forum has made that transition and can share some insight and advice, it will be hugely appreciated.

Thanks,
Debjani

Hi Debjani,

It sounds like you already have relevant project management skills and experience. I'd suggest studying the industry sector in which you'd like to work to see which PM qualification is preferred and go for that.

There are PM courses and webinars specifically aimed at people managing projects in the financial services sector. It's worth seeking some out and networking to find out which PM qualifications are most highly regarded. Think about complimentary skills and whether there is anything you can do to enhance your CV beyond a PM qualification.

Thanks,
A lot of the job specs I am looking at asks for Prince2. However, I have heard that Prince2 is more suitable for the construction industry.
Is that true?

No, it's not industry specific. Some people believe it's only for Information Technology projects, but the second revision specifically made the framework more generic and applicable to any project type. I personally know many different indusries using PRINCE2 so don't be put off if that's the way you want to go.

Thanks Duncan,
I heard about the PMP course today. That also seems like a good course.
Have you heard about this certification and have any views about its suitability?
Thanks in advance.

The PMP is a highly respected certification, but it can take up to three years to obtain this qualification. I have taken both PMP and PRINCE2 and find they compliment each other. It depends on your personal circumstances which are right for you. For me, I started with PRINCE2, passing after home study and a five-day course. Next, I obtained the PMP, which took me almost two years to complete. I feel that the PMP gives me more credibility as a practising project manager than PRINCE2 alone.

I've written a short post about project management qualifications that you might like to read: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1434

Thanks for sharing the review, Duncan. Its very useful. I think my position if somewhere in between doing a PMP and Prince2. I think Prince2 practitioner or agile will be my choice. Now need to find a accredited centre to do these courses. I think having some classroom coaching will be useful.

Thanks a lot for all your help.

There are many courses and certifications of project management. I would recommend you to go for PMP certification.
