I've been a project manager for a long time. I started out using ABT's Project Workbench, which is apparently is still around - it still exists as a free tool called Open Workbench. I never professionally used the Windows version of it, only an old DOS version. I eventually moved on to a DOS version of Microsoft Project and then on to the windows version of that which I have used off and on for many years.

The landscape of available project management and PM-related tools has changed greatly over the years. It is mind-boggling how many options are out there for project managers across all industries. Many have been developed by organizations to focus on some key capabilities that they felt were either missing or not well covered by their existing counterparts. It is nearly impossible to cover all available options or to have one go-to list when you're looking for a project management tool. That's what drove me to start this series of articles that will hopefully shed some light on the vast array of PM tools that can solve the many needs and challenges that project managers and their teams face.

Check out the slide show here and suggest ones you like that I've left out: 12 Project Management Tools to Consider

Mavenlink PM software is phenomenal as well. Rather than having 4 different programs to cover 4 different needs, Mavenlink incorporates everything. This includes time tracking, resource planning, team collaboration, project management, business intelligence, AND project accounting. Integrates with a lot of different programs as well such as Google Apps and Quickbooks!

Feel free to get in touch should you have any questions!

If you're looking for a simple and an easy to use Project Management Tool then you should try Brightpod. Unlike others, it has a clean UI which is a joy to use. It really helps you work faster and smarter.

Hi Brad,

My team make use of Jira for organising and tracking sprint work. It provides an excellent visual overview of what developers are working on and their progress. We display Jira information on a big screen in our office showing tasks in progress by each developer, issues found and issues resolved during the last 30 days along with tasks completed.

Cheers,
Duncan

I have used many online project management tools including Assembla, Jira, Wrike, but now i am using Taskque. Taskque offers many features which are unique and are not available in any tool collectively at one place. First of all comes here Queue feature of Taskque, which enables you to assign tasks in a queue to your team mates without any panic. Actually you define workload for the team mates. Let's say if you have define workload 3 then that user will see 3 tasks at a time on his dashboard. Hence he/she doesn't feel overloaded. Also you can set deadline for every task of a project. You can set priorities low, medium and high. You can create discussions as well. The best thing about discussions is that you can invite third parties in these discussions as well, which are not even on Taskque. The feature that I like most about Taskque is the summary of projects, which makes you check status of the progress.

Is it just me, or is that a dead link in the original post?

We use JIRA for issues tracking. The interface feels complicated, but otherwise it's a good way to keep written records of team discussions and decisions. It's very useful when, for example, someone new joins the project and needs to come up to speed on a topic. Far superior to endless strings of "reply-all" emails.

We also use Evernote for meeting notes (I also use it for a dozen other reasons). And I use Wunderlist for task management. Both of these programs are very robust and powerful. Highly recommend both.

Does anyone know of a good Risk Management software solution? We've created our own SQL-based risk register/tracking program, but it's pretty rough and cumbersome to use. Would love to know of a robust, user-friendly commercial solution.

Take a look at cloud-based project management tool - Apptivo. It is an easily understandable tool, more integrated application, and fully customizable. I think this tool is suitable for all who are looking for an ease of use tool at low cost.
