Hello,

At University College London (UCL), we are conducting a survey as part of a research project to understanding the challenges, difficulties, and failures of managing large-scale and complex technology projects, and the reasons why they fail far too often. Additionally, the research also looks at providing a methodology to support the delivery and assurance of these major technology projects.

We would love to hear from you. The survey should only take around 10 to 15 minutes to complete.

Thank you for taking time out to participate in this research study!

It is important to go with proper planning so that things can work well in case of large technology projects.

Planning is absolutely key and one of the critical areas. Other key areas that also need to be adequately addressed I feel are schedule, budget, scope, tecnology, management, monitoring and control. These areas are often overlooked especially in a large project environment.

As the deputy-PM of a very large technology project (http://dkist.nso.edu/) I can tell you firsthand that all the normal requirements of management apply, such as scope/quality/cost/schedule management, risk management, the need for high-quality/motivated team members, solid stakeholder engagement, etc... What is additionally needed, however, is very strong systems engineering involvement in PM planning. You simply can't succeed unless your systems engineering team is integrated into the PM office.
