My organization is very metric driven and there is a need to determine which project metrics we should concentrate on for the best outcomes. My goal is to reduce the number of metrics we track, and to concentrate only on those metrics that will have the biggest impact to the success of the project. Before I undertake this challenge of implementing a project retrospective system I was wondering if anyone else has gone down this path and what lessons they could share. My idea or approach is to do a post mortem on completed projects and to try to identify which metric did the best job in predicting project success or failure. Can anyone add their ideas or experience?

Hi aww91,

Are your projects internal or external to customers?

My view is that understanding the variance in work estimates proves valuable for incorporating into future projects. This would involve comparing targets Vs actual estimates, of course.

Also, tracking the number of change requests too; as this indicates how well the scope was defined upfront in most cases.

For governance reasons, I would say it is best to have use the same metrics throughout the portfolio to give consistency.

Thoughts?
