We are having contract with a company to develop a huge enterprise project. They are working 4 years on this project. We already having a production version, the final version will handover very soon. The system is very critical and any downtime is very serious problem. Do you think it's valid to compile and deploy the project by our team under supervising the company team for the last version of the product?

Hi there,

If you have the skills in house why not do the implementation yourself, however you need to be sure the vendor will underwrite your implementation and support you going forward.

You don't say why you favour this approach? Is to reduce costs?

Does your own company have the skill sets to implmenting the project product? I just cannot see why the vendor would favour you implmenting the project product yourselves as there is a risk that you may not implement it correctly; resulting in them then having to pick up the pieces when things go wrong. Who are the specialists here for this work, them or your company?

On a project of this scale, surely there must be a contract to say who is implementing the project product.

The contract dosn't clearly say who should deploy the closure version of the project. I am not sure if we have the skill to deploy the project. As I am new here and I don't really know the experience of the employees. But I think we should deploy the last version of the project to learn how deploy it, and this will be under supervision of the company.

Ideally, I would still go with the vendor organization for deploying the final version - with your team working very closely with them. I hope you have an agreement in place for at least some ongoing support and preferrably a 90 day agreement with the original project team from the vendor organization, since up time is so critical. That final deployment seems to be a bad time to take any chances or for your team to 'learn on their feet' so to say.
