Best Project Initiation Document

Postby dhaughey » Mon 02 Jul 2012 10:24 pm

Hi there,

I'm conducting a simple survey looking at what project initiation documents project managers use and which they find most effective. I've decided to look at this after finding a good deal of confusion over what constitutes a good document. You might say it's the content that counts regardless of document style, but in my experience some styles play better than others.

In my organisation we use the BOSCARD. It tends to score over the more detailed PRINCE2 PID in two important respects.

  1. It's short and gets straight to the point, allowing busy managers to quickly understand the proposal and approve or deny as appropriate.
  2. It can be completed quickly and avoids wasting time preparing lengthy documents when there is a chance the project won't be approved.

What do you favour and why?

Thanks in advance for your input.
