Re: Quick question from a noob in need!

There seems to be 2 separate questions here. 1 - How do you define what constitutes a project (criteria), and 2 - Once defined as a project what measurables should be set as targets (S.M.A.R.T)? In my opinion (1) is an activity covered right at the start of the project and possibly throughout the pl...

Re: Quick question from a noob in need!

I looked at this a while back. We may class work as a project and manage it accordingly if any of these are true: The amount of capital required to deliver the project is above a certain threshold. The amount of man-hours required to deliver the project is above a certain threshold. Whether the proj...

I agree, and I am too often amazed at the lack of any form of WBS I see on some projects.
Unsurprisingly, these are projects that tend to under-perform the most.

Re: Relationship between WBS and Gantt chart

This is a good post. When I started using Prince2 I created PBS's / WBS's initially but I soon went back to using the Gantt format as a starting point as I felt like there was too much duplication by creating separate documents. A possible disadvantage of not having separate documents could be that ...

Re: Resource Management/Reporting Tools

This could potentially get very detailed, but we use Excel to do this. We use the basis the the MS Project plans all integrate into a master plan so we can have a top-level indication of how we are manned to cover all projects. This is not exact and will not tell us tasks per person, but instead a m...

Re: Reporting status on multiple projects

Quick question first of all.
Are you aware of what information your board would like to review and to what depth?

We have created several versions of a 'Project Dashboard' but the board often comment that it doesn't tell them what they need to know.

Re: What Did You Do Today?

Thanks for the reply. Regarding this: Would it be feasible for one person to manage the portfolio of projects and allow all the others to focus on the work? This is where my management team may go as it has been mentioned, but I am concerned that the projects will suffer if there isn't a low-level c...

Change / Configuration Management

Hi We have a change control process where an engineering drawing will be controlled using a specific issue level (01, 02, 03 etc). The Designers release the drawings and our production team, testers, quality inspectors and suppliers all sign up to the most recent issue level and the parts that are p...

What Did You Do Today?

Hi All Strange question possibly? My employers and colleagues all seem to have different ideas of what PM's should do as part of their role and the lines have become well and truly blurred. We don't have any 'bought in' project managers where I work, we just ask engineers to manage projects and we'v...

Senior Supplier and Programme Management

Hi All In your experiences, how does the Senior Supplier and the Programme Management role work together? My thoughts are geared towards a small / medium sized business where management roles are fairly limited. A role of a SS is to ensure that sufficient resources are available to support the proje...
