rix187 Where I work we have a standard hourly rate for each different job role, so depending on the persons job title we input the different rates. Obviously the costs may not be exact, but they will be close and if you have many different people with the same job role the figures average out. George

The book, PMBoK has an absolute wealth of helpful information, and I found it most useful for when I just needed a little bit of pointing in the right direction. It was easy to skip in and out of and to different sections.

I think you can't go wrong with MS Project and Excel. Everybody pretty much knows the basics of Excel and Project, it isn't too hard to pick up as it has the same format. I use MS Project 2010 then copy the information to an Excel report I've made. I can show a progress report, cost reports, cost forecasts and charts for them all in one workbook. Most of it is automated too, so I don't have to spend ages importing data.
