Re: Request for help with a new project

It sounds like the document you refer to is very global / top level and a lot of it may not be directly relevant to your work. Maybe agreeing a set of tangible objectives with senior management is a good place to start to get things into context. Then you can the start to compile to necessary steps ...

Re: Starting a PMO in your organization. What should happen first?

Hi Brad I have been trying to get a PMO in place here for a while and the one thing that I have advised to happen first is to have an individual in place to head it up. Although we do have someone who's supposed to oversee all projects, he is also PM for his own projects and he tends to focus only o...

Re: What tools for resource management?

Good question. I approach this in 2 ways. 1. Project Manager Plans Project Managers use MS Project and use a shared resource pool that shows resource usage across all projects. This provides a general understanding of what can be delivered, deferred, not taken on, etc. It is not meant to be an accur...

Re: Known Issues Documentation Ownership

" Would have been good to find some formal project management documentation that supports our view to make it impossible for her to argue though in case anyone else knows of anything? " PRINCE2 manual: Page 109 End Project Report: This is produced by the Project Manager towards the end of...

Re: "5 Reasons Why..." review/overview series

I've used Wrike which is OK, but I tend to come back to MS Project due to the extensive tools, features and customisation it offers.

It would be interesting to learn how something powerful like MS Project can be used in conjunction with other services.

Re: Known Issues Documentation Ownership

Hi PRINCE2 suggests we produce an End of Project Report. I always include ongoing issues or responsibility hand overs in this document and I include all people involved in the circulation. In terms of who is responsible for gathering, documenting and communicating this information, I'd say the PM as...

Re: Project Going out of Control

Good responses!

Brad

Out of interest, at what stage of the project were 8,000 tasks identified?
I assume many tasks were identified as the project unfolded, but how did you go about planning a project of this scale?

Thanks

Re: Dealing with Developers

Hi Does the Developer have a functional manager? Or do you have direct authority over him? If he reports to someone else then I would tend to agree a target date with the manager and challenge him / her to get it delivered on time. This depends on the structure of the project team. Otherwise you cou...

Re: How can one check the success of risk management

Good question. This is one part of Project Management that frustrates me, since it is easier to measure what went wrong as opposed to what could have gone wrong and which was prevented. Do you use a risk register? I build risk management activities into my project plan and the quick answer for my Bo...

Re: Creating a Budget

My directors don't want to share details of people's salary. We don't ever calculate or monitor the cost of wages associated with project delivery. We work with an 'hours' budget. The idea is that when we plan the projects we designate an hours requirement per work package which we seek approval on....
